BYLLU paints fashion in a new light

The fashion brand BYLLU and its designer Lilyana Petrova – Lulu continue to blur the lines between art and fashion with their collection “Color and Light.” Inspired by Lulu's paintings, this line showcases garments that merge aesthetics, individuality, and freedom. Each piece tells a story filled with colors, textures, and emotions. The long shirt “KAI” is a model that combines strength, grace, and artistry. Inspired by the painting “KAI,” it features a female portrait with a wolf, symbolizing intuition and freedom. The white base and clean lines create a sense of lightness, while the airy satin fabric allows for effortless movement. Unique graphic details on the sleeves and collar add a modern finish, and the play of light on the smooth surface of the fabric enhances the feeling of dynamism. This shirt is for women who want to make a statement and wear clothing with deep meaning. With each new collection, Lilyana Petrova – Lulu proves that fashion is more than just clothing – it is a form of self-expression, inspiration, and creativity. “Color and Light” is an invitation to carry art not only in our souls but also in our style. For her contribution to artistic fashion, the designer was honored with a certificate of recognition from the Fashion Academy “For Merit in Artistic Fashion.” Stay tuned for more designs that blend boldness, elegance, and artistic spirit.

Liliana Petrova – Lulu: A Multifaceted Bulgarian Artist

Liliana Petrova – Lulu: A Multifaceted Bulgarian Artist Liliana Petrova – Lulu is a Bulgarian artist with a versatile talent, whose work transcends the boundaries of traditional painting to merge with fashion, design, and graphic art. After completing her studies at the National High School of Arts in Sofia, Lulu continued her education at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts and New Bulgarian University. She developed a unique style that blends classical and contemporary techniques. Her first solo exhibition took place in 2005 at the "Irida" gallery in Sofia. She has exhibited in galleries in London, Florence, New York, Cannes, Abu Dhabi, and various cities across Bulgaria. In 2018, New York's ArtTour International magazine included her among the top 60 most prominent artists worldwide. For several years, she worked as a costume designer in various reality TV formats, as well as in other sectors of the Bulgarian film industry. Passionate about fashion and beauty, Lulu founded her own boutique and artistic clothing brand, “BYLLU”. Left: Sport set "Flying with Chains". Right: The painting "Flying with Chains", part of the exhibition "Life with Crown", which inspired the concept behind the Byllu fashion brand. Lulu, what motivated you to create your own brand? The idea of creating this artistic fashion brand was born from my desire to bring art out of galleries and dedicated spaces. I wanted it to move freely among people, on the streets, transformed into unique and extraordinary garments. I called this project “Wearable Art”. My goal is to fuse art and fashion into a single entity, creating designs guided by this synthesis. Both in my paintings and my garments, I tell stories. I love working with images, vibrant and contrasting colors, expressive lines, and forms that blend seamlessly. When I transfer these paintings onto clothing, I pay particular attention to composition and how it shapes the body. That’s why I design garments with a clean and essential aesthetic, avoiding unnecessary details that could weigh down the structure. A fundamental aspect for me is the fabric: choosing the right material for each piece, ensuring fluid movement and comfort. Besides aesthetics and originality, my clothing must also be practical and comfortable. They should make the wearer feel happy, unique, and special. I don’t have a physical store—my designs are sold exclusively online. What is the biggest challenge in merging art with everyday life? For me, the biggest challenge is finding the right image, the ideal color composition, or the emotional state to work on. Many of my paintings take on a special role in the garments I create. The figures I paint come to life on the clothing, transforming into three-dimensional, dynamic forms. What is your connection with Italy? Since childhood, I dreamed of getting closer to Italy—watching films, reading books about my favorite artists and painters, studying art history, and listening to its extraordinary music. I have traveled extensively in Italy and love it in all its facets. My first major exhibition took place in Florence. I was invited to participate in a group exhibition at Galleria Mentana, a charming gallery with over 40 years of history, located right behind Michelangelo's David. I still remember my racing heartbeat as I presented my paintings there. The critics and media spoke highly of me, and I became one of the gallery’s resident artists. I believe this place played a pivotal role in my international artistic journey. Another one of my great aspirations was to visit Sicily, particularly Cefalù. I planned that trip for years, and finally, the day came when I arrived. I signed up for a tour and traveled with a dear friend and colleague. As soon as I stepped into the square and saw the majestic cathedral, I was deeply moved. I stood still, overwhelmed by the sight and the emotions it stirred in me. At that moment, I thought: One day, I will exhibit my work here—this is my place. And now, ten years later, that day is coming with my upcoming exhibition and fashion show at Ottagono – Il Duomo di Cefalù. A strange twist of fate was that I never took my return flight to Bulgaria. I was supposed to stay in Sicily for a week, but I ended up living there for a year and a half. I traveled, painted, fell in love, and lived happily… Liliana Petrova Receives the "Artistic Fashion Merit" Award During the "Ago d'Oro" 2024 fashion show, marking the 30th anniversary of the Academy of Fashion in Sofia, Liliana Petrova was honored with the "Artistic Fashion Merit" award. The recognition was presented to her by Professor Lyubomir Stoykov. When will the exhibition in Cefalù take place, and what can visitors expect? I had the honor of being invited by the Mayor of Cefalù to present my art, along with my new collection of artistic clothing and accessories, in this enchanting location. The opening will take place on July 11, 2025, accompanied by a fashion show titled "Light and Color Everywhere"—a true artistic spectacle with a minimalist touch, where painting, fashion, music, and dance will merge into a single experience. The exhibition will remain open until July 25. Right now, I’m in the midst of preparations and feel an overwhelming sense of excitement for this event!

Let's express ourselves through creativity and love

In the latest issue 76 of Banker Special magazine, readers have the opportunity to meet the designer behind BYLLU – Lilyana Petrova, known by her pseudonym Lulu. She combines elegance with a unique style in her work, inspiring women to be bold and different. Lilyana Petrova – Lulu – has been profoundly influenced by the art of such remarkable artists and designers as Van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Escher, Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Elsa Schiaparelli, Versace, and Louis Vuitton. In her creations – both in paintings and clothing – she tells stories. She loves working with images, bright and contrasting colors, strong, expressive lines, and shapes blending into one another. When transferring her paintings onto clothing, she carefully considers the composition and the way it shapes the body. This is why she designs very clean and simple models, avoiding unnecessary details in the construction. “For me, textile is of utmost importance — the material I choose for a given outfit, its lightness in movement, and comfort. Besides being extravagant, the garment must be comfortable and practical,” Lulu shares. Many of her paintings play a special role in her clothing. The images come alive, turning into three-dimensional and dynamic elements. Here’s what the designer of the BYLLU fashion brand says about this fall's trends:“We are witnessing the return of styles characteristic of the 1970s. The boho style is becoming increasingly present, offering various interpretations, while vintage elements are finding their place in numerous collections. The classic motifs of this period stand out with romantic notes, combined with chic and elegant details. Short skirts and shorts are back in style, and fall colors are paired with bright accents. An eclectic mix of classic and modern emerges, moving from abstract modernism to classic lines or the bohemian style of the 1970s. Particular attention is drawn to the oversized model, which is extremely popular among young people. It offers adaptability for everyday life, combining modern, chic, and avant-garde elements. In addition to the fall motifs, collections also feature bright colors, bringing a touch of delicate arrogance and abstract expression in a modern way. This fall promises to be exciting and diverse, inspiring us to experiment with past styles in a contemporary context.” Recently, Lulu presented part of the first collection of her fashion brand BYLLU, titled “Color and Light”, which definitely incorporates the trends for fall 2024. This collection is created for women who are not afraid to be different and shine in bold colors. It combines elegance with a subtle audacity, perfect for those who want to express themselves and their style while standing out. Lulu is inspired by the idea of bringing art out of galleries and museums and making it accessible in everyday life. Through beautiful, comfortable, and unique clothing, she aims to popularize the positive influence of art. Through the photo session for “Color and Light”, created in collaboration with photographer Kostadin Krastev-Koko (three-time winner of the Golden Needle award), the designer aims to convey to her audience how unique, diverse, multi-layered, and colorful everyone is. “Let us not be afraid to express and show ourselves with this magnificent palette of qualities, emotions, thoughts, feelings, and states. Let us free ourselves from the prejudices and boundaries in which we are accustomed to being placed. Let us express ourselves through creativity and love. Let us be happy and always, always, always have fun,” adds Lulu, designer of the BYLLU fashion brand.

Invited by the Fashion Academy, designers—including past award winners—will showcase their latest collections exclusively for the guests of the grand event. In connection with this milestone edition of the "Golden Needle," Professor Lyubomir Stoykov, Chairman of the Fashion Academy, stated:"It is truly exciting to celebrate 30 years since the first 'Golden Needle' award ceremony honoring Bulgaria's top fashion creators. That extraordinary event took place in 1994 at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, shortly after the establishment of the Fashion Academy in Paris with honorary chairman David Pizanti. I believe this cultural and historical achievement will serve as a powerful impetus for the growth and enhancement of Bulgarian fashion design and our fashion industry. In fact, this has always been our fundamental mission over the decades—to inspire and encourage Bulgarian fashion designers and all creators in the field of style and beauty, to elevate their image, and to strengthen their reputation both domestically and internationally.
